Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive and effective medical system that has existed for thousands of years. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are two of the main branches of TCM. Qigong, moxibustion, cupping, and nutritional and lifestyle counseling are also important therapies found within TCM. Besides gathering information from patient history and inquiry, TCM practitioners employ unique diagnostic systems such as analyzing the tongue, pulse and face. In California, a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) is a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has received training in all of the different therapies that comprise TCM. |
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into specific acupuncture points which are located along meridians – the pathways responsible for carrying energy throughout the entire body. Each acupuncture point is unique and is characterized by specific functions. Acupuncture points are chosen depending on your specific health concerns and the information gathered during each intake. During your appointment, diagnostic techniques such as pulse diagnosis and tongue diagnosis are used to formulate which acupuncture points are best for you.

Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine is a very powerful and important pillar of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Chinese herbs are able to help any of the conditions that acupuncture can treat and are often used in combination with acupuncture to enhance and lengthen the positive effects of your treatment.
Like each acupuncture point, every herb has a unique set of functions and properties. Each herb has an inherent temperature and affinity to certain areas and/or parts of the body. Chinese herbal medicine utilizes combinations of herbs to create personalized formulas for your health needs. As your health changes over time, so will your formula.
Herbs come in a variety of forms. You may receive a combination of dried herbs that are boiled and sipped as a tea, or your herbs may come in a pill form or concentrate powder that you mix in hot water.

Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which the herb Chinese mugwort is burned above specific acupuncture points or areas of the body. Mugwort used for moxibustion is most commonly found rolled in a cylinder like a cigar or pressed into small cones or balls to be placed on top of acupuncture needles. Besides being deeply warming and relaxing, moxibustion can increase energy, strengthen immunity, promote circulation and relieve various types of pain.

Cupping
Glass or plastic cups are suctioned onto certain areas of the body in order to increase blood and energy flow, thereby alleviating muscle tension, relieving pain, and promoting healing. Cupping may also help remove toxins from the body and can alleviate certain respiratory symptoms associated with colds, flus and asthma.
